Joost PH Drenth is a gastroenterologist and professor of Hepatology with the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the Amsterdam University Medical Center, The Netherlands. He received his medical degree from Maastricht University. He obtained his PhD (with honors) on a study of a rare autoinflammatory syndrome: hyper-IgD syndrome. He was head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the Radboudumc, Nijmegen (2010-2023). Prof. Drenth was research fellow (2002-2004) at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda USA, and is Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London and a member of the Academia Europaea. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the UEG journal (2019-2024), and is the current vice-president of the UEG. His research interest include rare liver diseases. During his scientific career he discovered genes for autoinflammatory diseases, inherited pancreatitis, and polycystic liver disease. He focuses on. He initiated >50 rigorous clinical trials in many rare diseases such as hereditary angiodysplasias, autoimmune disorders, polycystic liver disease, polycystic kidney disease amongst others. This opened up the road for novel treatment options for rare disease patients. His research endeavours resulted in  ~600 peer reviewed articles.
