Albert Parés

Albert Parés, M.D. is Professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona and Senior Consultant of the Liver Unit at the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona (Spain). Doctor Parés received his MD from the University of Barcelona Medical School, was trained at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona and become specialist in Internal Medicine, Digestive Diseases and Critical Care Medicine. From the beginning he is member of the Liver Unit of Barcelona, an internationally renowned research group in Hepatology. During a 1991-92 sabbatical period he was Visiting Scientist at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, USA, in the laboratory of Dr. Esteban Mezey.
As Hepatologist Dr. Parés is interested on cholestatic liver diseases in adults, particularly primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis as well autoimmune hepatitis and alcoholic liver disease. The core of his research has been in these fields, and he is recently focused on the consequences of chronic cholestasis mainly pruritus and metabolic bone disease. He has published numerous research papers in the top Gastroenterology and Hepatology journals and authored over 90 book chapters and reviews. He is member of national and international medical societies such as the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the European Association for the Study of the Liver, and he has been invited to organize and speak at Spanish and international congresses, courses and symposia. Furthermore, Dr. Parés has been in the editorial board of Liver and now serves on the editorial board of Journal of Hepatology, World Journal of Gastroenterology, Clinics and Research in Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Gastroenterología y Hepatología, Revista Española de Enfermedades Digestivas and Medicina Clínica.
